Truly in the open Atlantic
I'm crossing routes with a big cargo ship, the first i see since
yesterday afternoon, it's a lovely morning, a gentle wind and flat
waters, all is perfect here on UniCredit. Between me and the ugly cargo
ship i saw several times the distinctive blow of spray of a whale, always
fascinating, too far though to get a glimpse... I sailed all night on the
same tack and the sea state got better and better in the lighter airs. I
slept quite a lot, alarm set for 25 minutes at a time i must have clocked
at least 3-4 hours sleep, i feel very refreshed.
Another half day of sailing and UniCredit and I will have reached the
required distance to turn around and sail home, another few miles to the
middle of nowhere... I sailed off the continental shelf, the depth contour
has gone from 200 meters to thousands of meters, on chart i see i'm
sailing between King Arthur's Canyon and Whittard Canyon, underwater the
sea bed rises sharply from about 4000 meters to less than 200 in the space
of few miles, an almost vertical drop which infamously causes havoc with
the waves during storms... that's also why i'm enjoying near flat seas
so far offshore, nothing to disturb the path of the gentle Atlantic
rollers.
