SunGard Front Arena in Plymouth ahead of Round Britaind and Ireland Race
We arrived in Plymouth in the early morning of Monday after a non stop passa
ge from Portsmouth. The boat, formerly known as Mowgli, has been renamed SunGard Front Arena after our sponsor for this race.
we delayed the trip till Sunday early afternoon waiting for the blustery win
d to ease off a bit, the delay gave us a chance to sort out a few jobs on the to do list...
The passage was relatively straight forward despite a bumpy start with winds
of 25kt plus in the Solent...

Lots of hard work in the Poole to Solent return race
Dead on beat all the way back, short tacking a class 40 solo makes for a lot of hard work... Far from perfect start I sailed to the finish with the leading group taking fifth on SunGard Front Arena, but oh boy was I knackered when I crossed the line... Too little space to use ballast I had to reef down to keep the boat pointing high and was a little overpowered in the Solent beat with some messy tacks that didn't help me gaining ground...

3rd place overall at the Solent to Poole race
After an okish start I managed to take the lead of the fleet as we were approaching the needles channel... In fact I had enough lead that I thought I just had to defend my position by staying between the followers and the finish line... Ah ah ah I hear you laugh... What happened then? The j122 jbellino sailed by fellow OSTAR skipper Rob Craigie pulled a rabbit from his hat... He hardened up and squeezed into the so called North passage over the needles shingles banks.

Tomorrow racing solo from Solent to Poole on SunGard Front Arena
Tomorrow morning at 8:30 I'm due to race single handed from the Solent to Poole in the first race of the Coastal series organised by the Solo Offshore Racing Club.
I will be sailing in the open class for boats up to 40 ft aboard the class 40 SunGard Front Arena, named after my sponsor leading up to the Round Britain and Ireland race starting on June the 6th. Some 30 boats are expecte to be on the start line.
Conditions are set to be quite good for racing with gentle north easterly breeze that should make for a fast spinnakers run to the needles channel and on to Poole.

Cherbourg Double Race - There and back
We eventually made it to the start of the Cherbourg Double handed Race to Cherbourg, but what a rush!
The start was windy, heading east through the forts to exit the Solent, then a beat all the way to the finish line... We spent the whole night within 200 meeters of the front boat, a J125 which seemed to be doing exactly the same speed as us at all times... we chased them and forgot about the rest of the fleet, we had put several miles between us and the next boat behind and thought we were safe...

After a night spent battling for the lead neck and neck with a J125 the arrival at Cherbourg was a tough battle, the duo fought agaist the tide towards the entrance of the harbour whilst some of the competitor which had managed to gain to windward during the night sneaked in to to fill the podim places.
